1. Ride Experience
When shock absorbers fail to function properly, the vehicle will naturally experience severe jolting when driving over potholes or uneven surfaces; such conditions can quickly cause motion sickness. The intense bouncing-akin to dropping into a deep pit-creates harsh, jarring vibrations that feel like your heart is about to jump out of your chest. Any sense of in-car comfort vanishes, turning the ride into an ordeal akin to crossing rugged mountains.
This indicates a loss of shock absorber function; you should avoid rough roads, seek smoother surfaces, and get the shock absorber issue resolved promptly.
2. Abnormal Temperature
After driving over a rough road, you can check the shock absorbers by simply touching them. If the shock absorber housing feels cool to the touch, it indicates the unit is damaged and not functioning. Conversely, if the housing feels hot, it is operating normally; shock absorbers work by converting the mechanical energy from vehicle vibrations and wheel movement into heat and dissipating it.
3. Oil Leakage
During operation, oil mist from the heated fluid often collects on the shock absorber's cylinder walls. As the vehicle drives, this mist mixes with road dust kicked up by the wheels to form a layer of oily sludge; this is a common and normal occurrence.
However, if you observe oil stains or droplets on the cylinder walls or the lower mounting eyelet, or see oil seeping from the piston rod, it indicates an internal seal failure and an oil leak. This is not normal.
4. Unusual Noises
If a shock absorber fails, that wheel loses its damping effect, compromising the vehicle's overall suspension performance. When driving over bumps, you will hear harsh, loud clunking or banging noises.
When a vehicle's shock absorbers are damaged, the wheels may abruptly lose contact with the ground during turns, and occupants will clearly feel the vehicle leaning to the side; driving at higher speeds risks loss of control or skidding, and the vehicle lacks a sense of safety. The shock absorbers lose their ability to dampen the spring's extension and compression and fail to control the spring's rebound, meaning this "dynamic duo" can no longer effectively provide the necessary damping performance.
